چکیده

Preferential flow through soil macropores in tile drained soils can significantly increase the risk of pollution of surface water bodies by agricultural chemicals such as pesticides. While many field studies have shown the importance of preferential flow in tile-drained fields, few have included detailed numerical modelling of the processes involved. The objective of this study was to compare four conceptually different preferential flow and/or transport approaches for their ability to simulate drainage and pesticide leaching to tile drains. The different approaches included an equilibrium approach using modified hydraulic properties near saturation, and three non-equilibrium approaches: a mobile–immobile solute transport model, a dual-porosity approach, and a dual-permeability formulation. They were implemented into the HYDRUS-2D software package. The model predictions were compared against measurements of drainage and pesticide concentrations made at an undulating, tile-drained field in southern Sweden (Näsbygård) during a period of 6 weeks following spray application of the herbicide MCPA. The dual-permeability approach most accurately simulated preferential drainage flow, even though this approach somewhat overestimated the drainage rates. The equilibrium and mobile–immobile approaches largely failed to capture the preferential flow process. The dualporosity approach predicted much more distinct and higher drainage flow events as compared to the dual-permeability approach. Differences between measured and simulated tile drainage

Comparison of Pesticide Transport Processes in Three Tile-Drained Field Soils Using HYDRUS-2D

The purpose of this study was to assess the transport of the herbicide bentazone [3-(1-methylethyl)-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-4(3H)one 2,2-dioxide] in three contrasting tile-drained cultivated field soils subject to otherwise similar experimental conditions. Observed drain discharge rates and chemical concentrations in the drainage water reflected the different transport processes at the three s...

A simplified modelling approach for pesticide transport in a tile-drained field: the PESTDRAIN model

The paper presents a simplified model called PESTDRAIN. It simulates pesticide transport in a subsurface tile-drained field. It computes surface runoff and tile-drainage flow rates, along with the associated pesticide concentrations, with a variable event-driven time step. PESTDRAIN consists of three coupled modules: SIDRA, SIRUP and SILASOL. SIDRA and SIRUP are the water flow simulation module...

Impact of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity on the Prediction of Tile Flow

Preferential flow through macropores and other structural voids in field soils most often occurs at or near saturation. Our earlier research revealed significant differences in the value of the saturated hydraulic conductivity (A's) of a glacial till soil in central Iowa when obtained with five different measurement techniques. The five techniques included one laboratory constant-head penneamet...

Simulating pesticide transport from a sloped tropical soil to an adjacent stream.

Preferential flow from stream banks is an important component of pesticide transport in the mountainous areas of northern Thailand. Models can help evaluate and interpret field data and help identify the most important transport processes. We developed a simple model to simulate the loss of pesticides from a sloped litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) orchard to an adjacent stream. The water regime ...

Role of Groundwater Flow in Tile Drain Discharge

Tile systems drain water applied to agricultural fields as irrigation and precipitation but also may intercept regional groundwater flow. Identification and characterization of the potential sources of tile water is essential for informed management of salinity and contaminants. Factors influencing tile discharge including depth of water applied, evapotranspiration, water storage, drain blockag...
